Which CoolFire Laser Is Right for You? [Red vs. IR + Muzzle vs. RFA Explained]

If you’re serious about dry fire training, adding a laser to your CoolFire Trainer system is a game changer. But not all lasers are created equal, and the right one depends on your setup, goals, and gear.

In this guide, we’ll break down the two types of lasers CoolFire offers, as well as the two laser body styles, so you can make the best choice for your training.

Visible Red Laser

  • Highly visible on paper, drywall, doors, and reflective surfaces
  • Compatible with apps like Mantis Laser Academy and DryFire Online
  • Available in all CoolFire laser body styles
  • Note: May not trigger all reactive targets or camera-based simulator.

This is the go-to option for most recreational and competitive shooters who want real-time visual feedback.

Infrared (IR) Laser

  • Invisible to the naked eye, but detected by camera-based systems
  • Best for use with advanced simulators like Smokeless Range
  • Available in both body styles
  • Note: Not compatible with standard visual laser targets

If you're running a full virtual simulator setup, IR is likely the better fit.

Muzzle Laser

  • Screws directly onto the end of your CoolFire barrel
  • Adds ~1 inch to the overall barrel length
  • Requires removal before refilling CO₂
  • Available with both red and IR lasers
  • Ideal for shooters who prioritize compact setups or are using holsters that require specific fitment

Rapid Fill Adapter (RFA) Laser

  • Combines laser + refill port into one streamlined body
  • Adds ~1¾ inches to the end of your slide
  • No need to remove the laser to refill CO₂
  • Increases shot capacity by approximately 40 rounds per fill
  • Perfect for high-volume training without stopping for CO₂ refills

While the RFA adds more length, it's a favorite for instructors and competitive shooters due to its convenience and efficiency.

Setup Type Recommended Laser Recommended Body Style
Casual/visual dry fire Visible Red Muzzle or RFA
App-based training (Mantis) Visible Red RFA for faster fill
Full simulator (Smokeless) Infrared RFA
Holster-dependent training Visible Red or IR Muzzle (for length)

Final Tips Before You Buy

  • All CoolFire lasers require a CoolFire barrel system—they’re not standalone units.
  • Holster fitment matters. Be sure to check length and compatibility before choosing your laser body.
